Hot News: Mazda to Expand Range

Mazda is planning to produce a new city car, a fresh compact SUV and more variants of its existing models as it tries to expand its market share.
The company’s president and CEO, James Muir, told Autocar that he wants the company to become a “more aspirational brand that will be an alternative to the premium manufacturers.”
The plan majors on creating what Muir describes as “more depth” – offering a wider range of variants based on each model.
Small cars, including the microcar that will be based on the Kiyora Paris concept are going to play a much bigger role in the company’s future according to Muir, so we can expect more than one variation on the new Mazda 1.
Sportscars will also play a crucial part in Mazda’s future. Autocar has already reported on the next MX-5 becoming more lightweight and radical in appearance, and Muir described the iconic roadster as “going back to basics” when the new generation arrives in 2012.
A new Mazda RX-7 is also in the works. Although it is yet to be officially confirmed for production, a modern version of the rotary-engined icon would form an ideal halo model to a more premium Mazda range. (Thanks to Autocar for News and Pictures).
