It's set to be one of the most striking models in its class - and is almost ready to take on small 4x4s such as Ford’s forthcoming Kuga, the Nissan Qashqai and VW’s Tiguan.
As you can see, the 3008 takes styling cues from its big brother, the 4007. It has similar proportions and a bold front end that’s dominated by a vast grille, large Peugeot badge and distinctive headlights. Inside, the 4x4 is expected to offer plenty of flexibility. Our sources have revealed that the 3008 will be offered in five and seven-seat configurations, with the latter featuring a third row of fold-flat chairs. Options including a panoramic glass sunroof and satellite navigation will also be available.
In terms of the driving experience, the 3008 promises to be one of the most car-like SUVs in its class. Peugeot is famous for combining driver involvement with good road manners, and the newcomer is expected to be agile and fun, yet comfortable. Customers will also be able to choose between two and four-wheel-drive versions, with base models front-drive only, to keep emissions and fuel consumption as low as possible.
A mix of 1.6-litre turbo petrol and diesel engines will power the majority of models. Cold weather testing is well underway, as you can see from our spy picture (below). The newcomer will go on sale in the UK in 2010, with partner firm Citroen launching its own version of the compact SUV soon after.
