Spied: 2010 BMW 5 Series

This may look like a battered 7-Series, but don't be fooled. Underneath the cobbled together disguise lurks the new 5-Series, which is due to hit the road in 2009.
The class-leading saloon is set to get a less radical look than the current car in an effort to win more sales. Taking inspiration from the current 3-Series and forthcoming X6, the newcomer will get less pronounced flame surfacing and a rakish roofline.
Inside, the cabin will be an evolution of the current car, altough there will be more space front and rear. As you can see from these shots, the dashboard features a distinctive double hump in order to house an updated version of the iDrive multi-media system.
Under the more conservative bodywork is expected to be tweaked versions of the current engine line-up. Entry-level models will get the 2.5-litre petrol straight-six, while an even more powerful version of the 5.0-litre V10 should star in the M5. Diesel fans will also have the choice of both 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre straight-six twin turocharged oil-burners.
Like other motors in the firm's range the 5-Series will benefit from Efficient Dynamics. Stop-start technology, regenerative braking and energy saving engine components will all be present. And alumium will be used extensively for chassis components in an effort to save weight.
Expect the newcomer to make its show debut late in 2008.
